I came across this quote the other day and thought it so summed up my Bolivian experience to date – good and bad.
“That’s the key to having it all; stop expecting it to look like what you thought it was going to look like.” Cindy Chupack
Often, when things don’t turn out how we expected, they can actually be better, as long as we are not so fixated with our original expectation. So you need to stop expecting things to be as you might have originally planned for them to and be ready to adapt and accept that they will be different.
This is especially important to keep in mind for those of us who come from the western world. It is fatal to begin to measure things by the same standards that we had back home.
If you think about it, if we wanted a Western world life-style we wouldn’t have come here in the first place, we’d just stayed at home.
So for all of us who at times need a reality check, it’s good to think: “What would I be doing now, what would my life be like if I wasn’t here?” Thinking like that quickly makes me happy about the choice I’ve made.
